This week we have the two tracks hotly tipped to be Christmas number 1 battling it out. The two contenders are, Nirvana – Smells like Teen Spirit, put forward by the very same, quite brilliant people who defeated the X Factor single to the number 1 spot with Rage Against the Machine two years ago. Their opposition, X Factor winners, Little Mix with their version of Damien Rice’s Cannonball. It’s up to you who wins, mark whichever track you play on the Storm studio whiteboard and come the end of the week, we’ll tally the numbers up and proclaim one, Christmas Champion of Stormfm 2011!
This week, Blink 182 takes our Track of the Week title with their single, ‘Wishing Well’. Taken from their album ‘Neighborhoods’ which was finally released on the 27th September 2011 after 2 years in production and several delays. They will be playing in the UK & Ireland on June 12th at the O2 in Dublin, June 13th at the Odessey Arena-Belfast, June 15th at the Manchester MEN arena and June 20th at the SECC in Glasgow, United Kingdom.
So yeah, currently can’t get enough of this band. Pete’s not so keen, but I can predict big things on the horizon for these guys. I played one of their older tracks ‘Take Another Ride’ on air during Off the Cuff on Sunday and it received generally good reception from listeners. I’m not quite sure how to describe them in a genre, but they definitely have a deep-south [USA] twang to their sound (despite them hailing from Glasgow!). As for drawing comparisons, the only band I can think of who resemble this sound would be the good old Crash Test Dummies. NME drew this same comparison, but as you can imagine with them being NME, drew said comparisons for all the wrong reasons. You can check out their pitiful excuse for a review HERE. Be sure to read the comments section for further amusement :-P … I urge you to heed my word (and plenty of other reviewers for that matter) over NME’s. Not that I can claim to have written a review here, but please do check them out on YouTube. A video of their latest single ‘I Don’t Know’ I’ve posted up top and for those of you who like to try before you buy, their début album ‘Hope St.’ is currently available to stream for free on Spotify as well as a paid version downloadable via iTunes… Safe to say, they’re quite possibly my Band of the Month (BOTM) – perhaps that should become a feature? :D
Storm AGM tomorrow and I’ve got the rest of my speech to finalise. I learnt some interesting information today surrounding the elections and safe to say me nor Pete are as confident in our standing as we’d like to be. Nevertheless, we plan to become ever more involved with Storm FM next year, so don’t expect to be hearing the same voices on all of the outside broadcasts! ;) Much to look forward to!
This weeks TOTW is Mona-Teenager. Having already featured on our music review show, Amplified, as the Best New Release, we feel the track deserves to be bumped up in status as our TOTW. The band originate from Nashville, Tennessee and were shortlisted for the BBC Sound Of 2011 after appearing on Later…With Jools Holland. In America. the band won MTV’s Brand New for 2011 award and their debut album is set to be realeased on the 16th May 2011.
Track of the week is Gypsy & the Cat – Jona Vark. Taken from their debut album, entitled Gilgamesh. Their first single, Time to Wander has gained heavy airplay in the UK and their native Australia where they were nominated for Unearthed J award. The equivilant of the the Critic’s choice.

Hey guys, another amazing track for you this week. We see ‘Villagers’ first effort with ‘Becoming A Jackal’. An unusual yet fantastic track from the Mercury Music Prize nominated artist. Hailing from deep Ireland, ‘Villagers’ flows a dark, nervous (but at the same time securing) sound that encahnts listeners! Brilliant track and album; really wortha listen.
