When Wednesday met Sunday…

Category : Shows

It’s Sunday, it’s time for your weekly dose of The Sunday Sessions.  This week we had more interviews, were mellowed out with Mayhem Wednesday‘s acoustic set and the usual ‘Quizzing In Your Ears’. We also got around to playing you our ‘Musical Top Trumps’ after last weeks chaos with A41‘s studio takeover delayed us playing our ‘Summer Tunes’.

This week we were joined by two thirds of Mayhem Wednesday, Tom Jackson who is a prophet of miserable pop and Mike Bull who’s a rocket scientist (we thought it was cool, though he didn’t blow anything up). We’ll be uploading a podcast of the boys interview shortly (so keep your ears pinned back).

Mayhem Wednesday’s Tom & Mike performing ‘Did I?’

The boys brought along their lovely acoustic guitars and played us some chilled out tunes to help us all relax before the onset of exam season. You can download the three original songs they played for us, ‘Battles,’ ‘Did I?’ and ‘ Song For Hannah’ here.

  • Mayhem Wednesday – Battles (Live)
  • Mayhem Wednesday – Did I? (Live)
  • Mayhem Wednesday – A Love Confused
  • Mayhem Wednesday – Song For Hannah (Live)
  • Mayhem Wednesday – Breakfast At Tiffany’s (Live Deep Blue Something Cover)

Mayhem Wednesday's Tom & Mike performing 'Song For Hannah'

After the interview Evan (after being misplaced last week) was Quizzing In Your Ears. Team JimmyMac (James & Mike) played against Team Gorgeous (George & Tom) and eventually thrashed them. It became apparent early on that Tom’s musical degree meant nothing in the face of Mike’s all encompassing lyrical knowledge and fascination with Jame Blunt trivia.

We also played you George and James’ Musical Top Trumps, postponed by last weeks chaos we played you our ‘Summer Tunes’. We started out with Tom and Mike’s pick of Len’s ‘Steal My Shunshine’.

And we finally got around to playing you some of our favourites from the ultimate ‘Summer Tunes’ band, The Beach Boys.

  • The Beach Boys – Little Deuce Coupe
  • The Beach Boys – Surfin’ USA
  • The Beach Boys – I Get Around

If you want to hear more of Mayhem Wednesday then check out their Facebook page for up to date info and goings on. You can also download their debut album ‘Here Goes Nothing/Everything’ here. If you want to see Tom playing live he will be at performing a solo acoustic set live at Branch Out 2010 at the Belle Vue on the 1st June.

Another week and another fantastic Sunday Sessions was upon us. This week we had interviews, some awesome live acoustic tracks from A41 and the usual ‘Quizzing In Your Ears’. The show was so jam packed we hardly had any time for our ‘Summer Tunes’ in the show’s ‘Musical Top Trumps’.

This week we managed to shoe horn 7 people into the studio, unfortunately Evan couldn’t be with us this week so we were joined by our good friend Scott Marsh as he is the missing link between us and the band (he went to school with three of them).  And of course we were joined by A41 band members, Matthew Coucill, Bryn Anderson, Alex Warrington and Chris Turton.  We’ll be uploading a podcast of the boys interview shortly (so keep your eyes peeled).

A41 live in the studio

A41's Matt performing 'Hollywood Walkway'

The lads brought along two acoustic guitars, a set of bongo’s, a tambourine and an egg shaker and produced some fantastic music to boot. You can download the two original songs they played for us, ‘Hollywood Walkway’ and ‘The Sun Shines On The Silver Tree,’  here.

  • A41 – Hollywood Walkway (Live)
  • A41 – Yellow Snow
  • A41 – Wires (Live Athlete Cover)
  • A41 – The Sun Shines On The Silver Tree (Live)
  • A41 – What Comes Around Flys Away! (Live Mash-up)
  • A41 – Last Dance
A41 live in the studio

A41's Bryn & Chris performing 'The Sun Shines On The Silver Tree'

After the interview we returned to Quizzing In Your Ears where Team JimmyMac (James, Bryn & Chris) played against Team HawtDawg (Scott, Matt & Alex) as they became dubiously known. The teams remained close throughout the quiz with Team JimmyMac leading by a solitary point and it was only in the final round after a disputed tiebreaker decision that Team HawtDawg won the day.

Due to the chaos that was A41 we only had time for a couple of Musical Top Trumps and our ‘Summer Tunes’ this week were

  • MGMT – Kids
  • The Beach Boys – Surfin’ Safari
  • The Beach Boys – Good Vibrations

If you want to hear more of A41 then check out their Facebook page which allows you to listen to some of their other songs like ‘Yellow Snow’ and ‘What’s Her Name’

Thanks for tuning in and we shall see you next Sunday when we’ll be joined by at least half of Mayhem Wednesday! :D

PS – Big thanks to the Storm FM Tech Team who helped make the show run so smoothly.

This week the heat well and truly got to us here on The Sunday Sessions. Despite having technical and biological malfunctions the show had to go on. So we had the sound of drums, some mild mannered ‘Quizzing In Your Ears‘ and some movie based ‘Musical Top Trumps‘.

We welcomed back Dave Hannaway, Irish Cymbal Monkey, to play us a short drum set after his respectable 4th place in last Wednesday’s Bangor’s Got Talent Final (congratulations to the winner, Tommy Cole). As we were too busy being deafened by Dave in the studio we’d like to hear your thoughts on how the set sounded so get in touch with us here. Just remember to speak loudly so we can hear you over the ringing in our ears.

Dave played for us

  • Blink 182 – Adam’s Song
  • Bowling For Soup – …Baby One More Time

Dave also kept score for us (as our very own drumming baby) during Quizzing In Your Ears. We were joined in the studio by Chris Davies and Anna Brown, our good friends from Bar Uno. This week Team Bibbles (Evan & Chris) went head to head with Team Gorgeous (George & Anna). After a close start in the opening rounds Team Gorgeous eventually won out with the final scores standing at Team Bibbles – 6, Team Gorgeous – Something larger than 6,  because Dave lost count in the final round.

George and Evan also played Musical Top Trumps this week with a theme of ‘Movie Music’. Next week George and James will be pitching in with our ‘Summer Tunes’.

Playlists for Musical Top Trumps

  • Tina Turner – Goldeneye (from Goldeneye)
  • The Rocky Horror Picture Show – Time Warp (from The Rocky Horror Picture Show)

  • Eminem – Lose Yourself (from 8 Mile)

  • Berlin – Take My Breath Away (from Top Gun)

We also featured Randy Newman as our Movie Musical Artist this week because we all love his songs from the early Pixar movies

  • Randy Newman – You’ve Got A Friend In Me (from Toy Story)
  • Randy Newman – Time Of Your Life (from A Bug’s Life)
  • Randy Newman – If I Didn’t Have You (from Monsters Inc)

Thanks for tuning in and we shall see you next week when we’ll be joined by Ellesmere Port based band A41! :)

The All New Sunday Sessions!

Category : Shows

This week we welcomed in a new 3 hour format for our show. It saw exciting new features including ‘Musical Top Trumps‘; as well as some old favourites like ‘Quizzing In Your Ears‘.

We also had a nice change of pace this week with the muscial stylings of Tom Jackson of Mayhem Wednesday. As promised, you can get Mayhem Wednesday’s full album here. Due to the success of Tom’s strummings we have decided to make it a recurring feature; so watch this space.

We were also joined by Dave Hannaway; a foul mouthed Irish drummer who thankfully didn’t swear. Dave will be playing drums in the Bangor’s Got Talent Final! And we think you should come along to Time on Wednesday and support him because he’s promised to cram his drum kit into the studio and play for us if he wins. :)

This week Team JimmyMac (James & Tom) faced off against Team Gorgeous (George & Dave). The day was unanimously won by Team JimmyMac who trounced Team Gorgeous in the final round. Our first edition of Musical Top Trumps was also a resounding success allowing James to show George that Britpop can be  more subtle than first thought.

Next week Bibbles and George will be playing Musical Top Trumps with ‘Movie Music’.
