Helios – Eingya

Eingya Album Cover

This evening Mark Stanley, a member of storms Music team and presenter of Frequence brought on quite an interesting offering, Helios – Eingya.

The album itself is an ambient electronica album, which Mark chose because it stirs thoughts and feelings inside as well as many of the songs reminding him of past events or places, such as family holidays in snowy wales.

Whilst the album isn’t the usual style for Groundbreakers I did enjoy the content however sleepy it made me feel. Overall the album did move me in a way that only ambient music can do, alot of the songs lead me to visualize mountains and open nature which I always enjoy. It stirred memories of mountain walking or riding through the country and left me with an overall feeling of peace and calmness which is very uncommon.

For this reason, as I’m very much an all go person, this album take the Groundbreakers seal purely because it did actually relax me and make me feel calm and I feel that maybe more people should try listening to this type of music when trying to chill.

The Pixies – Doolittle

Category : Shows

Doolittle Album CoverTonight I was joined by George, one of Storms programme controllers with his favourite album The Pixies – Dolittle, which has been influential to him since his school days.

The biggest appeal of this album to me is the music that it influenced in its wake, bands such as Nirvana and Puddle of Mudd as well as so many other grunge sort of acts would just not really be the same without this offering. Along side the influence the album has had it is also very bass heavy which also appeals and therefore I am proud to give it the title of “Groundbreaking”

Lower Than Atlantis – World Record

Category : Shows

World Record Cover Album CoverTonight’s guest was Bob Chatterley, with his chosen album World Record by Lower Than Atlantis. Bob chose this album as it was released around a time when he did a lot of thinking and can relate to many of the songs and also remembers how he felt when it was released.
Whilst the album is a good offering and I think the band will do well, I just can’t bring myself to call it “Groundbreaking” because it quite simply isn’t special or individual enough and is just another fairly typical alternative hardcore rock album as are so popular at the moment.

The Sunday Supplement: Reign of The King – 25 years of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Category : Shows

In this Sunday’s show, myself and Adam paid testament to one of the greatest managers to ever grace the game.

Ovation: Man Utd rename the north stand in testimony to legendary manager.

Raised in the harsh Scottish city of Glasgow, Sir Alex has raised himself from a skinny forward plying his trade for Queen of the South to the manager of one of the greatest football teams in the world, Manchester United. Whilst making a name for himself in Scotland with Aberdeen, winning the SPL twice and also bringing European success to Pittodrie, he was noticed by many teams south of the border. Wolves and Tottenham were acquitted with having interest in the young manager but when Manchester United eventually came knocking, he saw an opportunity he could not turn down. His task, to break the dominance in English football held by fierce rivals Liverpool. Since, the Glaswegian has never looked back and has won an array with a titles and trophies with an ever impressive outfit of players. The likes of Bruce, Hughes, Ince, Giggs, Keane, Neville, Scholes, Beckham, Ronaldo and Rooney have graced the red shirt of Manchester under Ferguson’s guidance and played a part of Sir Alex’s campaign to make Manchester United the greatest team in world football and eventually over-throwing Liverpool as the most successful club in English football.

Bangor Oxjam 2011 – Review

Category : Shows

As any music loving student from Bangor will know, one of the key things missing  from the city is a strong live music scene and although there are numerous successful open mic nights spread around the place there are very few gigs with the nearest being Llandudno or beyond. All of this is set to change this year however as a series of venues will be opening their doors across the year to offer a weekly live music fix, if this is indeed the case then Oxjam should be the first of many live music experiences hitting Bangor in the near future.

For those who aren’t aware Oxjam is a nationwide movement raising money for and awareness of Oxfam through a series of music festivals taking place all over the country with Bangor’s own festival taking place on Friday 28th October 2011 in Base nightclub located at the bottom of the high-street.  The venue itself was one of the pleasant surprises of the evening as although there was no raised staging areas the venue was large and spacious and never felt too confined or restricted.

The first act of the night was Bangor University’s very own Tommy Cole, an acoustic artist armed with critical success, a back catalogue of covers and some dazzling original work. Opening with a cover of Lana Del Ray’s Video Games and flowing casually into Radiohead and Sam Sparro covers Cole was in his element and definitely within his comfort zone with the audience eating out of his hand. His set took a turn from the good to the great when he ditched the safety of covers and performed some original material, his music shone and came across as early Paolo Nutini meets Bombay Bicycle Club’s debut, Cole’s lyrics and style made for a memorable set and he’s certainly an artist to watch for the future.

The second artist was Beyond The State, a North Wales rock group who burst onto the stage with an explosion of sound and energy, they launched original material at the crowd whilst also slipping in masterful covers and remixes from the likes of Dido and more. The talent of Beyond The State was what stood out however it was their stage presence and their original material which bodes the best for their future with track after track at their disposal and the confidence to pull it off.

Finally the last act of the night was Zebedy, a North Wales rock band who are currently surfing a wave of success and hype following some great gigs, a battle of the bands and an ever growing fan-base. From the moment they touched the stage the band were nought but professionals performing together like a group well beyond their years or experiences and delivering solo material sure to get them noticed in the near future.

Congratulations has to be given to Emily Taylor for organising such an event and bringing such great music together under one roof with minimal assistance. Each artist present at Oxjam was a resounding success with their talent and passion bursting out and paving the was for many more successful nights to come. If Oxjam 2011 proved anything it’s that North Wales is currently harbouring some real musical talent that should be, and deserves to be fully supported.

Party Rock Anthem!

Nick and Caryl Party Rock Shuffle

Click the link above to check out our skills!

Friday mornings are getting a douse of dancing when Nick Bell and Caryl Burke start throwing out some legendary shapes in the Storm FM studio. Despite being tea-less, I had the energy to pull off exceptional moves whereas Caryl, high on life and high on hot chocolate was performing one of the best robots ever witnessed amongst the foothills of Snowdonia.

The discovery of the quick buttons was a remarkable bit of fun with Stewie Griffin’s “Who the hell do you think you are?” illuminating our Friday morning and sending our beloved Caryl into a giggling fit. My favourite was “to the bat cave!” Much fun.

Finally before I sign off, the fun Welsh word of the week was Sbigoglys. Guess what that means and you’ll receive a visit from a unicorn with many presents.**

Have a lovely day from the English and Welsh duo!

Nick Bell and Caryl Burke.

**unicorns aren’t real and will not bring you presents for knowing what Sbigoglys means.

Jeff Wayne’s Musical War of the Worlds

Category : Shows

War of The Worlds Album CoverTonight’s Ground Breakers was  a Hallowe’en special and instead of featuring a guest as we usually do we instead decided to feature an extra special Ground Breaking album with a darker feel to it. So I (Biscuit), decided that the album that was most fitted to this special show would be Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of the War Of The Worlds. (1978).

This was a concept album based around a combination of progressive rock and orchestral string music which retells the classic 1898 H.G.Wells, War Of The Worlds story in a wholly new way. Not only this but it also had a string of big names in the music and movie world of the time.

The album coupled the story with songs that in their own right are also very individually important and influential. The single “Forever Autumn” for example holds a special significance to myself.

Whilst the album is in no way new, it deserves it’s place among our other Ground Breaking albums as it was something very new that hadn’t been attempted before and it’s influence can be seen by the fact that it is still a best selling musical at Londons West End over 30 years later!
