Flashback to Summer Balls Past

Category : Shows

It was a sad time last night as we presented the last Flashback for this year, but we didn’t let that dampen the mood and had a bit of a party in the studio while playing out songs from headliners from Summer Balls past to warm you all up for this Saturday’s event!

The list of past headliners was found through not-so-secret sources and greatly impressed both me and Robyn. For such a small city and small university we’ve had some big name acts.  For this reason we here at Flashback would like to say a massive congratulations to the Union, past and present, for their commitment to giving us students a good send off every year.

Below is the playlist from tonight’s show, and although not a completely exhaustive list of the artists who have performed for our pleasure, it gives you a brilliant idea of the awesomeness of the Bangor Summer Balls. We urge you all to go to the ball on Saturday, if you don’t already have a ticket get to the union quickly as they’re almost sold out! It is always a great night out and not one to be missed!

Finally, Robyn and I would like to thank all our lovely listeners for tuning in over the past year and hope you’ll stick with us if and when we make our return to the airwaves next year. We’d also like to thank the Storm exec (past and present) for putting up with us and letting us on air! Have a great summer guys and we’ll see you all next year!

Flashback!!

Category : Shows

Hey Guys!
Sorry for the long blog silence! Ali and I have been back the past couple of weeks with the usual cheesy and old songs and outrageous chat.
We kicked off the last half of semester with updates about the little celebration that was the Royal Wedding, and re- lived what we both got up to over the Easter break.
In terms of our random news updates, we found an article on the BBC about changes to the iconic New York taxis, which has led to the birth of the New York ‘van’, a massive change to what we are used to seeing.
We also have a set challenge for our listeners! If you tuned into last weeks show you would have heard us talking about the moustache and beard championships held in Norway. Our challenge is for anyone of our listeners to send in any photos they may have of an attempt to grow their facial hair for September. Up to the challenge?
That’s all from me for the time being. Good Luck to all those still with exams!
See you next Monday from 8
:)

Flashback!

We were back to our usual antics once again this week, with our discussions turning to weird beauty tips and The Royal Wedding. You may have tuned in a few weeks ago and listened to us talk about doctor fish, well we have now found a new strange beauty product which involves snail slime cream. The snail slime apparently makes your skin silky and plump, however to us, it still sounds bizarre.
In around a month, The Royal Wedding will be upon us, will you be celebrating? A hotel next to Westminster Abby certainly will be, with prices for rooms with a prime view of the west entrance costing a small sum of £100,000 pounds! There has also been news that a small and tame stag party has already been thrown for Wills on a Norfolk Estate.
That’s it from me for now. Tune in next Monday 8-9pm for some more golden oldies with me and Ali!
Robyn over and out! :)

Flashback Movie Week Special!

Category : Shows

We both really enjoyed this weeks show, playing all those classic film soundtracks (and a few suprises)!
Last night we played a wide range of songs giving you lot the opportunity to guess which film they came from, and keeping to Flashback tradition we also added random and interesting facts about each song.
1. Little Green Bag- George Baker Selection (Reservior Dogs).
It was named the ‘greatest independent film of all time’ by Empire. It was genrally well recevied especially in the UK!

2. Beautiful Stranger- Madonna (Austin Powers 2).
This song was written specifically for the film which also led to a Grammy Award for Madonna. Austin Powers 2 was nominated at the 72nd Academy Awards for best makeup, and was very well received worldwide.

3. Diamonds Are Forever- Shirley Bassey (Diamonds Are Forever).
This was the 6th and final film to star Sean Connery. And you may not know that this song was also recorded in Italian, which we both agreed we would love to hear!

4. Fame- Irene Cara (Fame).
This musical has been staged under two titles, Fame and Fame on 42nd Street. This critically and commercially successful film was followed by a six season tv series and a reality tv show.

5. Welcome To Duloc- Shrek Soundtrak
We just could not resist adding this to our line up, and what is there to say really. Shrek was a huge box office smash and is the 4th highest grossing film of 2001. Shrek also won the first ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

6. (I’ve had the) Time Of My Life- Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes (Dirty Dancing)
This was originally a low-budget film with no major stars, however it became a massive box-office hit and was the first film to sell more than a million copies on home video.

7.Blue Velvet- Bobby Vinton (Blue Velvet and Scorpio Rising)
This song is unique in the fact that the song actually inspired the movie Blue Velvet. Scorpio Rising was considered to be one of the first post-modern films and an influence to future directors such as David Lynch.

8. All that Jazz- Catherine Zeta-Jones (Chicago)
It won six Academy Awards in 2003 including Best Feature. There have been several recordings of this song due to it being a huge hit on the stage.

9. Singin’ in the Rain- Gene Kelly (Singin’ in the Rain)
Now I was a bit of an idiot here and did not realise this was from a film (yes I know don’t worry Ali has all ready put me straight). This film was not a huge hit when it was released, but was given it’s status through critics. It offers a comic depiction of Hollywood and it’s transition from silent films to “talkies”. It provides us with the iconic images of Gene Kelly Splashing through puddles which are still seen today!

I hope you all enjoyed the show, I know we certainly did!
Flaskback will resume it’s normal cheesyness (I may have just made that word up?) next Monday 8-9pm.
That’s it from me
Robyn over and out! :)

Are You Superstitious? Ali Obviously Is!

Category : Shows

I (Robyn) am beginning to think that every time our show goes out, the topics we cover become increasingly weirder than the next!
On Monday’s show we began with talking about superstitions and whether we have them or not. Ali spilled a few secrets about some of the strange things she gets up to in order to avoid bad luck, one of which involved talking to magpies! I on the other hand mentioned that I do not take too many precautions against bad luck and (touch wood) I’m doing ok! oooh wait? Was that a precaution? I guess it is in most of us ;)
With Comic Relief well on the way, we thought we would give you some updates with what’s going on in and around Storm and indeed the UK with regards to the big day Friday 18th March. This included Cam’s 24 hour stint on the radio on Friday 18th and Ant and Dec’s sofa snatching scheme, which involved them taking the iconic sofas from Daybreak, and The BBC Breakfast show, they also managed to get 2 pairs of Lorraine Kelly’s tartan underwear (strange we know). All these items will be auctioned off in aid of Comic Relief.
Also don’t forget elections, voting opens the 21st March and closes at noon on the 23rd March.
That’s all from me for the time being; don’t forget we are back at the same time next Monday 8-9pm for our special movie soundtrack show! Be there or be square!

Flashback Updates!

Category : Shows

So, it may be about 48 hours late but here’s your Flashback update for this week!

Now without further ado lets get on with our normal array of weird and wonderful stories from around the world and our line-up of blasts from the past!

We started the show with an update on the world of Comic Relief. We talked about how much of a hero (Robyn’s words not mine) David Walliams was for completing 24 hours of live panel shows in aid of the charity. We also mentioned Chris Moyles’ attempt to break the record for the longest show ever broadcast on BBC Radio 1. The record currently stands at 37hours and was set by Simon Mayo in 1999. Can he do it? We’ll let you know. Our final piece of Comic Relief news was our very own 24hour broadcast. As you’ll have seen from other entries on the Storm FM blog, our very own Station Manager, Mr Cameron Ward, will be undertaking a 24hour lock-in of his own here at Storm FM Towers. Can he do it? Tune in on March 18th at noon to listen in and find out :)

Robyn also brought us some stories from the Storm Ghost Hunting Social. My favourite part was hearing how the Main Arts security guards hid down the corridor and then jumped out and scared all our lovely Stormies. Also, hearing how Robyn is now scared of Powis Hall was priceless considering how the majority of her exams will be held there in only a few short months.

So from stories of ghosts, we moved on to stories of competitions to win money for your funeral. Yes, that’s right, one German local radio station are running a competition to win €3000 (£2578) that must be used to pay for death insurance. The idea behind the competition is to raise awareness of death with their younger listeners, and break the taboo that surrounds discussions of death. To win you must write an inspiring epitaph for your headstone. Famous examples of epitaphs include Winston Churchill’s “I am ready to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter.”, comedian Spike Milligan’s “I told you I was ill.” and Frank Sinatra simply chose the title of one of his songs: “The best is yet to come.” With such good examples, could you write a better one?

That’s it for this week, we’re back again same time, same place, next week. 8pm. Mondays. Storm FM.

Flashback! Updates!

Me (Robyn) and Ali were back again last night a blast from the past playing the usual cheesy/old tunes. On the show we discussed the Oscars, recent technology fails, this years comic relief (some of which we think are insane) and also the possible health risks of doctor fish.
We also had some very exciting news for all the Bridget Jones fans out there, with news that there is indeed going to be a 3rd film being made :). The film should include all the same cast, with Renee already agreeing to sign up :). We will keep you informed.
As I mentioned in the previous blog about a few themed shows coming up, we have both agreed that a movie week is a must, so look out for that over the coming month amongst others.
That’s it from me for now. Tune in next week Monday 8-9pm.

Hello :)
Sorry for our recent blog silence! Me (Robyn) and Ali are back with our cheesy/old tunes and our random chat. Our first show back after christmas consisted of me taking the reins for the first time while Ali was away and we discussed who had the best voice in the world, which after much debate it was decided that it was between Morgan Freeman and Alan Rickman! Much to my relief my partner in crime Ali, was back the following week so we were up to our usual antics discussing controversial songs which to our surprise included one by Olivia Newton-John!
Due to the 6 nations drawing ever closer this weekend me and Ali could not resist talking about the big match in todays show and who we are supporting throughout the tournarment!
That’s all for now, tune in next Monday at 8 with Ali and a special guest while Im away!

Flashback! Christmas Show!

Category : Shows

So we were back again this week with a special festive show with me (Robyn) and Ali :) That’s right everything from Elton John to Bing Crosby was on the show today.  However poor Ali was a little under the weather today so I had to be extra specially nice to her this evening :).

Now in last weeks show we did mention one of our topics for this week, which was our favourite christmas smells which we discussed throughout the show with our listeners. The reoccuring  smell was that of the christmas tree, and how we both have to have real christmas trees over the christmas period just for this smell .

As well as this we had a chat about how “christmasy” all these songs are making us feel and how me and Ali are looking forward to going home for the holidays, especially for proper heating which seems to have disappered in Bangor of late! Once again I had a tale of the weekend so to speak, which which today was the fact I accidentally sledged down parts of Snowdon on Sunday which probably wasn’t the wisest thing to do, but we genuinely had no idea where we were! I would also like to mention that I would not recommend this to anyone with some snow comming as far up as my waist. This led us on to Ali’s childhood christmas stories about her sledging skills and her very impressive 7ft snowman in her back graden made by her very tall brother!!!!

Because it was our christmas show we did mention the different songs trying for number one this year and both agreed however much we do enjoy watching X Factor and other artists, we would love to see a real christmas song get to number one this year. Any one who has been watching/listening to the media recently may have herd about the women ringing 999 to report a stolen snowman which we both thought was a bit bizarre and Ali came up with a valid point that it may have just melted?

The show concluded with me and Ali sharing our favourite christmas smell which for me was christmas trees and for Ali was the smell of gingerbread. Unfortunatly our show will not be on next week so all there is to say now is MERRY CHRISTMAS from me and Ali, and we hope to see you in the New Year! :)
